NS 2557 		Two shots of former Conrail SD-70 NS 2557 leading an loaded coal train 13 April 2001. The first image is the train at Wabun, VA, and the second image was taken from the Colorado Street overpass in Salem, VA. The train had to stop in Salem for over an hour because the crew did not hear the Train Sensor Array (TSA, aka defect detector) report a status after they passed it. This train was involved in a derailment in Roanoke only minutes after resuming it trip and passing under the Colorado Street overpass. 24 cars derailed, and about 20 were totalled, but fortunately the crew was unharmed. News reports later indicated that someone 'sabotaged' the train to cause the derailment. The vandal(s) apparently closed off the air valves between two cars and disconnected them, so that the train would not go in to emergency and no air pressure loss was detected in the cab or by the EOT. After the train resumed its trip, it left with only twenty or so hoppers of its 100+ consist. The rest of it started rolling after it, and caught up to the head end in Roanoke. It was an odd feeling watching the rest of the train roll under the bridge, and realizing it was moving of its own accord.
