Norfolk Southern Class GS-1 Gondolas

NS Class GS-1 gondolas fall into the series NS 11000-11749. They were renumbered from the Southern series 1000-1749 in the early '90s. Built in 1960 by Pullman Standard, these cars were the first aluminum bodied gondolas ever built specifically for unit coal train service. They quickly earned the nickname "Silversides", before the bare aluminum faded so dramatically.

These cars dutifully carried coal for over forty years, but most if not all have recently been sold off by Norfolk Southern to an unknown fate.

The April 2004 issue of Mainline Modeler magazine contains a James Kinkaid article with drawings and P-S builders photos of these cars in their original Southern livery.
