Norfolk Southern Class G109 Gondolas

Norfolk Southern ordered four prototype hybrid coal gondolas from FreightCar America in 2005. All four cars were 4105cf BethGon II style cars constructed of steel, aluminum (end sheets, and upper half of side sheets) and stainless steel (tubs and lower half of side sheets). All four cars were built 01-06 at FCA's Roanoke facility. They were built in two sub-classes, differing by the heights of the stainless steel and aluminum side panels. NS 46000-46001, class G109A, were built under FCA order 1400-220. NS 46002-46003, class G109B, were built under FCA order 1400-221. The even numbered cars were fully painted, while the odd numbered cars were left unpainted.

The first production order for these hybrid coal gondolas became NS class G113.
