Snowball Express 2000

On Saturday, 25 November 2000, the Finger Lakes Railway ran a Santa train called the Snowball Express that made stops in Geneva, Waterloo, Seneca Falls, Cayura and Auburn. I was fortunate enough to catch it in Senca Falls that day with my digital camera.

Rumsey Street Crossing

I first caught the Snowball Express on the west side of Senca Falls at the Rumsey Street crossing near Goulds Pumps. GP-9 1702 was in the lead, followed by their FGLK 100 Maintenance of Way flat-box decorated for the season. High-hood ('Classic') GP-9 1751 was next, and B23-7 2301 brought up the rear.

Academy Square

The train made a stop at Academy Square, the former Mynderse Academy middle-school turned office building. A crowd of children and parents greeted Santa on the flat-box.

Meanwhile myself and a few other photographers took the opportunity to cover the event from several angles.

I had to take several shots of B23-7 2301 showing off her recently acquired lightening-stripes. For a railfan who has lived in Norfolk Southern territory for the last decade, that gray stripe almost seems gaudy. Almost.

Johnson Street

I got a couple of parting shots as the Snowball Express was leaving town on its way to Cayuga, catching it as it crossed Johnston Street near the old Sylvania plant. That yellow railing marks the edge of their parking lot.

I don't know who that little girl getting the cab ride in 2301 is, but she seemed to be enjoying the ride.

Happy Holidays!
