Cincinnati Trip

A business trip to Cincinnati provided my with an opportunity to railfan some new and exciting places. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate on the first weekend I had free. The only thing worth mentioning from Saturday, March 16th was seeing an NS train lead by five SD40-2's along the Ohio River east of Portsmouth - the best example of Norfolk Southern's new 'matched locomotive consist' plan I've seen so far. Of course, I've since seen several exception to that plan, so go figure.

Sunday, March 17

All pictures from Sunday were taken in a span of about four hours at Winton Place in Cincinnati. Winton Place is THE hotspot for rail action in Cincinnati - the parade of trains was nearly non-stop. I also had the pleasure of meeting Jeff Horstman there, whose excellent Norfolk Southern CNOTP web site proved helpful on Saturday.

These weren't all the trains that passed, just the passable photos taken on this rainy day.

Four roster shots of CEFX 3138. Despite the SD45 radiator flare, it is stenciled as an SD40-2 above the front truck, indicating that it has presumably been remotered with a 16-cylinder engine. Note the unusual horizontal dual headlight on the nose.

Saturday afternoon was the next (and only) other chance I had to railfan.
