Snow Level Route

CSX Train with UP power kicking up snow. A CSX train with some UP power kicks up a cloud of snow as it speeds eastbound along the Erie Canal at Clyde, NY on 1 December 2002.

Singer Moon, Take 2

Singer Signals under the moon. The sequel to "Singer Moon", another attempt to capture the signals at Singer under the moon. This time the not-quite-full moon was shining through a thin layer of clouds, making for a more moody picture.

Modern Steamer Under The Stars

A time-exposure night shot of NS D8-32B 3532 idling at Radford, VA on 2 November 2002. In typical GE fashion, the engine would repeatedly cycle down and rev-up with a splash of exaust over and over. The wind was blowing from left to right, resulting the plume of exhaust normally associated with steam locomotives.

For comparision (and since taking night photos was their idea), check out similar pictures from Mark Gasson's and (hopefully coming soon) Robb Fisher's photos from the same photo session.

"White Cliffs of Eggleston"

Okay, this one's not very original, but it's still one of my favorite pictures. NS 8840 leads a coal train east on former Virginian tracks at Eggleston, VA, passing the famous New River Palisades. This was a favorite spot of the official Virginian Railway photographers, used often for their annual reports, and copied by many photographers since. This picture was also taken on 2 November 2002.

Again, check out Mark Gasson's photo of the same train.

"Proof Through The Night"

A night shot of UP SD70M 4876 in front of the Bluefield Locomotive Shop.

Better Railroads and Gardens

NS train 763 lead by NS D9-40CW 9579 with UP 9593 passing the Bluestone Interiors building and some purple wildflowers/weeds at Bluefield, VA on 29 September 2002.

Singer Moon

Singer Signal with the full moon The signals at Singer under the full moon.

Smoke Signals

Train 112 leaving Radford Train 112 leaving Radford Train 112 nearly hid the signal bridge in smoke as it started up on its departure from Radford, VA. The unit putting out most of the smoke was one of the few remaining active C36-7's on the NS roster. The fourth unit was an BN SD70MAC.

Last Call at Nightfall at Falls Mills

NS 9223 "NS J54, Clear, Falls Mills, Main 2". A set of helper locomotives calls the signals at Falls Mills, VA on their way west at twilight. The last picture from a long day of railfanning on 'The Poky', before the camera and the scanner are put away for the day.

Not the sharpest picture, but I like the way the signals, headlights and reflections are all lined up -- not too bad for a 'grab and shoot' picture.
