The ex-N&W Christiansburg District tracks parallel the Whitethorne District tracks through Salem.

Train 754 NS 7508
Coal train 754 passes Union Street and the Salem Connection Track on its way to South Yard, as seen from the Colorado Street overpass in December 2005. Minutes later, a hostler bring three ES40DCs out of the Connection Track and follows 754 toward south yard, where the three units will likely become the lead motors of 754 on its trip down the Winston Salem line to Duke Power's Belews Creek Steam Station.

NS 8937
Train 185 runs westbound on the Whitethorne District at Mills Lane in November 2005. It left Roanoke Yard via the Salem connection track, and will return to the Christiansburg District at the 'VN' crossover.
