New River is a small community directly across the New River from Radford, just west of the town of Fairlawn. There are a couple of grade crossing here on the west side of the bridge over the New River that provide access for taking pictures.

Train 16T crossing the New River
Train 16T crosses the New River on an October 2005 morning.

Train 112
Westbond train 112 nears the array of track sensors just east of the New River Road grade crossing in July 2005. The two tall poles detect high/wide loads, used most often to inform trains with double stack loads that they will need to use the 'stack route' at Montgomery. The dark sensors on the ties between the poles detect dragging equipment and hot bearings. The white box on the foreground pole is an Automated Equipment Identification (AEI) tag scanner that reads RF tags on every freight car for shipment tracking and other purposes.

NS 6749
Class lights still intact, SD60I 6749 brings its train off the New River bridge and approaches the Church St. crossing.
