Willowton (East) HALES GAP (West) Kellysville
Hales Gap is a narrow cut through the hills where the East River turns south to go around a large hill before emptying into the New River.

Before the 1971 abandonment of the Virginian between Kellysville and Narrows, the Virginian tracks went directly through the hill in Hales Gap Tunnel.

The lead C39-8 of train Q55 emerged from the cut into the last rays of sunlight on a June 2005 evening.

Two trains pass through the cut at Hales Gap on a rainy Sunday in June 2003. First is train 757 on main 2 assisted by a GP50 donated by the V34 local after the 8745 experienced mechanical troubles, followed by train 185 on main 1.
