NS Christiansburg District |
The links in the column to the left will guide you through the district. Each location page has links to the previous and next location along the line. Start at Salem and go west, or scroll down and start at Bluefield and work your way east. Or just jump directly to your favorite location(s). The Christiansburg District extends from milepost N257.4 at Randolph Street in Roanoke, VA to milepost N362.0 in Bluefield, WV. At milepost N264.1 in Salem the Catawba Branch diverges and extends to milepost S2.8 (Lakeside). At milepost N289.3 near Christiansburg, the Blacksburg Branch leaves the mainline and extends to the Corning plant at milepost CA3.7. The short Kingston branch leaves the Christiansburg yard and serves Southern States just across Route 11. At Walton (milepost N297.5), the Pulaski District heads southwest toward Radford and Bristol. Near Pearisburg the Potts Valley branch crosses the New River and heads up the big stony creek valley to a lime plant at Kimballaton, VA. At one time it extended all the way up through West Virginia to Paint Bank, VA, but most of that portion of the line was abandoned in the first half of the 20th century. The Whitethorne District rejoins the Christiansburg District east of Narrows. The Princeton-District district of the Pocahontas Division connects at Kelleysville. If you use a scanner while railfanning, don't miss our list of Christiansburg District Signals and TSAs, printable for handy reference while trackside.
