Montgomery (East) CAMBRIA (West) Christiansburg
Cambria is the location of the former passenger and freight stations in Christianburg, VA. Both stations still stand. The passenger station is being used by the Norfolk Southern Maintenance of Way department, while the former freight station is privately owned and used as offices. Christiansburg is one of those towns with a questionable local ordinance that prohibits the use of horns at grade crossings.

There are two crossovers at Christiansburg. East of the grade crossing is a crossover that lets eastbound trains on main 1 switch over to track 2. West of the grade crossing is another crossover for the other direction. Each crossover is guarded by a separate set of signals, the eastern one is called "Christiansburg" while the western one is called "Pelton".

There is a defect detector here at milepost 289.9, right in front of the former passenger station.

In the second photo, they prepare to couple their caboose up to the empty hoppers they need to pull. They will leave the empties and the caboose on the short track to the left while they spot the loaded cars. This train was also photographed on its trip back the to Radford on the Christiansburg page.

When a heavy August 2004 thunderstorm rapidly moves in, what do you do? Retreat to your car and photograph train 112 out the passenger window! Then turn the car around and photograph eastbound 16T out the same window to keep the rain from hitting the camera lens. After the rain passed, a Union Pacific GP60 brought train 274 east as the light was fading.

Back in April 2003, the V39 local delivers a covered hopper to Southern States. To accomplish this, it had to back up the hill caboose first from Radford, pull into the back tracks of the Christiansburg yard, and back up the Kingston Branch. Since the Kingston Branch is exempted track, the conductor needs to flag the crossings at Depot St, Park St and US Route 11.
