The western end of Christiansburg District, and the New River Subdivision itself, ends at Bluefield, WV after climbing up the East River Valley from the New River. The east end of the yard used to be protected by RD Tower, and the signals there are still called RD.

Train 825 Train 762
On the last day of December 2005, empty hopper train crawls past the Bluefield Car Shop, its train stretching down the hill on the far right.
Train 762 enters the Virginia Division as it passes under the eastbound signals at RD in February 2005.

SD70MAC CSXT 777 and fellow CSXT SD70AC 4845 were the power for train 184 on a fine autumn day in November 2005.

Train 55M
Train 55M climbs into the yard track with 56 cylinders of pure EMD 645 power in June 2005. Behind the lead SD40-2 (with its original N&W horn) are LTEX and WC SD45s, both still possessing their original 20 cylinder motors.

A very late train 835 crawls into Bluefield on the 'freight runner' on a Saturday evening in February 2005. This train had left Roanoke nearly 24 hours earlier, first stalling on the Christiansburg grade due to engine trouble. After receiving a push from another train, it was then delayed at Walton due to a bad-ordered hopper. Once the crew outlawed, the train was left parked at Walton overnight until being recrewed the next day.

On two different October 2004 afternoons, train 758 leaves the yard with a mere 6000 horsepower, while train 185 passes over a top-of-rail lubricator as it climbs toward the yard near the WV Route 120 overpass.

With a three-unit pusher set assisting on the rear, train 83A slowly makes its way into the yard from off the Pocahontas District in June 2004, passing the landmark "Lin Electric Co." ("We do It Right") sign near the US Route 52 overpass. An H11A hopper built in March 1964, now relagated to ballast service, watches its rebuilt/rebodied Top Gon siblings pass by. After a crew change, the train continued over the Christiansburg and Whitethorne Districts as train 764.

Two westbound trains entering Bluefield Yard in January 2004: Train 767 on the westbound running track, and an unusual angle showing the entirety of autorack train 274 on main 2. Both photos were taken from the easternmost road overpass over Bluefield Yard.

Train 185 enters the yard at Bluefield with a warbonnet in March 2003. This train was also photpgraphed at Ada.

Kicking up a cloud of snow, Catfish 8923 leads train 61R, a westbound unit train of molten sulfur tank cars, into the Bluefield yard in January 2003. In the first three pictures, the far end of the train is still passing through Ada; in the later two, the train has passed RD and entered the yard.

An empty coal train is being recrewed in Bluefield Yard in October 2001, while the coaling tower looms behind it.
