Rural Retreat is the loation of Klockner Pentaplast, an industry that is regularly served by the V37 local that runs west from Radford. They receive inbound loads of plastic pellets in larger covered hoppers.
The railroad station is still standing just off the main road through town,
with a former N&W Caboose on display across the street.
To the east of town is the longest passing siding on the Pulaski District.
Constructed in the 1990s to support the addition of double stack traffic,
it is over 10,000 feet long. Often this is the only passing siding between
Bristol and Radford long enough for long double stack trains to pass each
other.
